Date: Tue, 07 Nov 95 09:06:00 EST Subject: Re: Boost reading Regarding your boost gage reading 9:00 under wide open throttle, this is not normal. At full boost the gage should be pegged high. As far a bending the gas pedal to allow full throttle opening, I haven't tried this. But I did notice that the throttle cable at the engine has some slack in it at idle. It looks like you can adjust this slack out by unloosening some lock nuts and turning the cable housing end (kind of like adjusting the derailleur on a bicycle). I couldn't find a spec in the shop manual for cable slack, so I'd take most, but not all, of the slack out so that you don't affect the idle setting. Removing this cable slack may have the same effect as bending the gas pedal. Does anyone know how that engine differs from a standard turbo engine? John Happy Notes from the Short Family Frog Farm! ------------------------------ From: uunet!bendnet.com!jdshort (John & Diana Short) Date: Tue, 7 Nov 1995 06:36:22 -0800 Subject: HI So has anyone tried one of the $400 chip and valve packages (I think from Superchips) that is supposed raise the boost and get substantial power increase from the factory turbo? It sure sounds alot less invasive than some other mods, but does anyone know if it really works? Also seems like it would keep the low speed performance that is lost with addition of a larger turbo like that from HKS. And maybe the real question, at what point to these engines blow? Can they really handle more turbo pressure reliably? Anybody out there that has blown one up, what did it? I wouldn't recommend any cupholder if your roads are the least bit bumpy (like most Ohio roads). A passenger in my car foolishly thought that it would be a good idea to get some coffee for the road. Despite the lid, she ended up wearing a good fraction of that coffee after a few potholes when it bounced out through the hole in the lid. Besides, I don't think real sportscars should have cupholders. When minivan ads brag about how many cupholders they have, then that's just something I don't want to be associated with :) Besides, how many cupholders does a Ferrari have? - -- Mike Marks '93T, 34k '85 Aires, 100k ------------------------------ From: "Mark Shehan" Date: Tue, 07 Nov 1995 10:21:28 EST Subject: Re: sway bars, wheel spacers I believe the NA MKII has a smaller front sway bar, however, I don't know this for a fact. My '91 MKII turbo came with a 17 mm front and 19 mm rear bar. I now run a 24 mm front bar to give the car more neutral handling (and to get the rear end to hook up better since I don't have limited slip). Running w/o a front bar on the pre '93's is NOT recommended. At the moment I'm running w/o my front bar while I repair the sway bar mounts and the handling is interesting to say the least! Body roll is prevalent!! I will probably be ordering a set of 1/4" wheel spacers in the spring for autocrossing. I'll let everyone know if they make any improvement in the handling. Anyone has a Momo super anatomic shift knob. Does it look right at home in a MKI and does it fit right in. What is it made of and how is it compare to the factory knob (I think the factory is not bad). Where to get it cheap, I think I saw it somewhere on a web page advertised for $49. Saw this as a post last week. Bend the gas pedal!?!? This is a silly way of going about adjusting the throttle linkage. An easier way would be to adjust the cable mounting at the throttle body cam. It takes five minutes, and if you screw it up, you can adjust it back! With the engine off; if you can get the pedal to bottom out with a clunk, you are getting full throttle. Be careful not to allow full throttle too far off of the floor, as this can stress the cable and mounts with the over eagerness of an excited driver. At the very least I would recommend checking this. Mine was out of adjustment and shorting me on the fun factor. It obviously did effect his car. That's how it's supposed to work. The softer end gets the grip. In general: To add understeer tighten the front and loosen the rear. To add oversteer loosen the front and tighten the rear. So for you 91 and 92 owners with the quirky rear suspension, tightening up the front with a larger swaybar will help keep the rear end at bey (at the expense of some front scrubbing). When I hit bumps the suspension compresses and makes a rubber on metal scrubbing noise. I tried lubing the sway bar bushings with Teflon spray and that didn't work. Next, I plan to spray the exposed metal on the struts. Has anyone else had this cold weather noise problem? Or could the Teflon wreck the strut seals? This will be my first season with the MR2 in a colder climate- I just left Texas where it never freezes! Thanks in advance for any cold weather maintenance tips. The "Short List" of major parts includes: Engine, 5spd transmission, complete electrical system, interior door panels, pass. seat (grey/blk), pedal assemblies, shifter assembly, starter, most glass, rear bumper, tail lights, "modified" air flow meter, steering column, dashboard, guages, stock swaybars (front & rear), hood, engine cover, trunk lid, pass. door, steering rack, complete suspension...
