The problem was a caliper locking up. I got home one night, walked around the car and saw the inside of the tire glowing. Looked cool, but really wasn't. Solution? Ended up replacing the caliper on the one side, both sets of rotors (they were old, needed new anyways), and both sets of pads. Are they >continuing the Celica as well?? > > My initial reaction to the picture in AutoWeek is that the Mk II is a better looking car. I agree that the Mk II is one of the best looking cars on the road. I was following a red turbo out of my subdivision this morning and was struck again with the really sensual and powerful shape of the rear end of that car. Since the picture in AutoWeek was only a 3/4 front I have no idea what the rest of the car looks like. I suspect that it really isn't a 4 seater and that the rear seat will be for dogs, packages and children under 2. The moderate horsepower rating doesn't give me much hope for the performance level of the car unless it really isn't much heavier. The mid-engine layout does give me some hope that at least the wonderful handling characteristics of our cars will live on but the retractable top certainly compromises structural rigidity and may add enought weight to significantly lower overall performance. This discussion is much like the one that occurred when the Honda CRX went away and the del Sol was introduced. It took a long time before the motoring press accepted the del Sol as even a remote successor to the CRX. So I guess that only time will tell, first they have to build it then we'll see. I suspect that if they do build it then the MR2 will be no more. As to the fate of the Celica, not a clue. No they have nothing written on them, I recall the MKI ns had MR2 on their back, looked very nice. Thanks in advance, Rick ------------------------------ From: Bruce Brandt 834-7372 Date: Thu, 26 Oct 1995 13:09:45 CDT Subject: Synthetic Oil and Hp Gains A week or so ago someone, I deleted the message too quick so don't remember who, posted a skeptical comment regarding a claim by a synthetic oil to increase hp. These claims were first made by Mobil in the mid '70s so aren't new. They also happen to be true. In fact if you are using a conventional 20W50 or 10W40 a switch to a 5W30 synthetic will probably do more good than the Tornado that has been discussed. The reality is that the synthetic does not increase hp, it just looses less. The internal friction of the oil consumes hp. There are a set of formulas for sizing the bearing journals of a crankshaft and part of the calculations is the heat generated from this friction of the oil with itself and the associated hp loss. The heat generated can actually cook the oil in the bearing. The lighter the *weight* of the oil the lower the viscosity and therefore friction. Less friction loss = more available hp. I think I still have the formulas, although not the computer modeling program I wrote, if anyone is interested I will try and find and post them. The problem doesn't seem to follow any pattern except that it is worse after a long drive with the A/C running (engine fully warm). Most of the time the problem doesn't exist since the weather here isn't hot. I have been using 92 octane fuel, but that has a minimal effect. Is there some sensor that may be bad? I have no error codes from the computer. Any suggestions? A note on California emmisions packages, Most of the time time the emmission control is the same for 49 states and for California.
