Date: Tue, 24 Oct 95 09:20:00 EDT Subject: Tire Size Info This is for the person that requested info about mounting 205/50-15 Dunlop SP8000 tires on 15X7 rims. My MKII has 15X7 rims on the front with 205/50-15 Yokohamas, and they fit and work great. I'd personally have no problem putting the Dunlops on that size rim. I think they would fit and work just fine. I was considering the SP8000 before I bought the Yoko AVSi tires. I decided on the Yoko because it is a little bit grippier. The Dunlops would probably last longer, but grip was my priority. A 215/50-15 will probably fit okay, depending on your wheel offset, but it will be close. Has anyone else tried this size? I'd like to try it when these tires wear out. The overall diameter is about the same as the stock 195/55-15, so strut spring perch clearance is okay. But clearance with the swaybar at full steering lock may be very close. BTW, on the rear I have 16X7.5 rims with 225/45-16 tires. I might try a 245/45-16 next time. You can see them on the web site -- picture name is bb94.jpg, I think, and there is a text file that goes with it there, too. Since the picture was taken, I replaced the wheels' blue center caps with silver ones. They state that it is the replacement for the MR2 and is a mid-engine 2+2 with what looks to be a retractable hardtop. Power is from a 5 valve version of the Celica 2.2 NA that makes 179 hp, not too shabby but could be stronger ala Honda VTEC. Having a back seat would ease some of the insurance issues, I think I paid an extra $400 per year in CA because of being a strict 2 seater. Not sure if I like it or not but the concept looks good. I just bought an 89 MR2 with 76k miles and the engine check light keep coming on for couple second and goes away. I talk to the used car dealer and they said it might be a dirty oxygen sensor. The car drives fine even when the light came on. Anyone out there had any similar problem or know what might be the cause of it. I've been told that in stock form the boost pressure (to the engine) is limited to 7lbs with the turbo capable of force feeding up to 12lbs. Am I correct in understanding that it's just a matter of switching out a bypass valve for another (translated - adjustable) unit? Is there a blow off valve that would also have to be replaced? Am I also going to need to worry about the stock fuel injection not keeping up at maximum boost? What am I looking at for expenses? I am mainly interested in getting as much as possible out of the stock equipment, although I will most likely be changing out the engine management chip (Any recommendations???) and removing the muffler. If you have eliminated the muffler in favor of a straight pipe on your MkII Turbo, please e-mail me and let me know how you like it. My friend is selling his 1993 custom painted black turbo that is fully loaded including t-tops. He's got 225/40 ZR16 all the way around using Dunlops mounted to five star Milano Porsche style rims. Rims are brand new. There is a clarion amp built into the floor of the trunk. The previous owner of the car spent $7,500 on engine tweaks (with bills to prove) doing all the work through Toyota to keep the car in warranty. There is also an aftermarket clutch, maybe centerforce. I don't know how much boost the car is running but I have driven this car and it is incredibly fast. The revs and the boost needle climb at such an incredible pace. One of the fastest MR2's in Toronto. This car has beaten another MR2 that had an EVC, VPC, and an airinx filter. This car is faster than an LT-1 Corvette. There are approximately 60,000KM (check with the owner for exact figure). He regretably has to sell the car because he's moving out. Anyone interested call Dino at (416) 493-9305. Serious inquires only please. ------------------------------ From: Derek Motloch Date: Wed, 25 Oct 95 00:13:26 -0400 Subject: Whats new? Hey everyone... how's the MR2's running? I am considering installing some fun.... There is a TURBO kit available for a 93 Celica.... the GTS (2.2L NA)...and that is the same engine the MR2 NA has.... I have talked with the company...and they say they have used it on an MR2 before...and get 250-260 hp out of it... Anyone tried it? Betcha that would beat any Corvett.....or NSX... Probably even beat a Viper. Derek Motloch - London, Ontario, Canada dmotloch@serix.com 91 NA ------------------------------ End of mr2-digest V1 #11
