However you who wish to post, and who must subscribe first, must think along these lines newly added to the info file: "subscribe" or "unsubscribe" must be in the BODY of the message, NOT in the Subject: or any other header line. At the present time, specifying your address explicitly in the "subscribe" or "unsubscribe" line usually won't work; just say "subscribe" or "unsubscribe". ------------------------------ From: uunet!scroggrj.orl.wec.com!jerry (Jerry Scroggins) Date: Mon, 16 Oct 1995 12:51:23 +0000 Subject: 85 MR2 Transmission Problems I have a severe problem with my manual shift transmission jumping out of 4th gear while under load. It was very infrequent at first, and now has progressed to the point that I cannot drive it in 4th gear without it jumping out of gear. I have no other problems with any other gears nor does the transmission act odd in any way other than the refusal to say in fourth gear. I can hold it in and it works just fine. (No accident damage ever and no transmission repairs ever.) I have tried the following. 1 - Made sure nothing is restricting the shift linkages. 2 - Replace the cracked motor mounts all around. 3 - Inspected all linkages, brackets, etc., to make sure all are OK. Anyone had any experience with this problem or am I a first ? Thanks, in advance, for your time and effort expended and reading and thinking about my problem with my MR2. All responses will be appreceiated, either posted to this list or direct to the following address. jerry@scroggrj.orl.wec.com Jerry ------------------------------ From: uunet!softy.softwords.bc.ca!geoff Date: Mon, 16 Oct 95 11:26:16 PDT Subject: Tests and stickers First off, thanks to David for the work on the listserver. A 2 1/2" straight pipe after the primary cat kills BOTH bottom-end torque AND top-end horsepower. A SuperTrapp without the second cat does NOT work very well regardless of the number of discs (1 through 24 and open). Some back pressure IS required. The best compromise of bottom and top-end I've found to date is a 2 1/2" pipe with both the main and secondary cats and no muffler. I autocross in a stock SCCA SOLO II class which requires me to keep all of the emission controls in place. Running without a muffler kills some of the bottom-end torque, however, there is a LOT more top end now. Launching at autoxes is a little more tricky without as much bottom end (bogging the car is easier). I've heard that Dynomax muffler's work pretty well after the second cat also..... although a '94 MR2 turbo locally dropped the Dynomax in favor of a straight pipe after the second cat (same setup as mine), and has been happier with this setup (at least in autocross situations). The exhaust note is not TOO loud without a muffler.... kind of cool actually! It IS a little loud driving through parking structures though. When I start the car in the morning, I am greeted with a small puff of blue smoke. I also noticed this event over the weekend, when I floored the car to pass a semi who was coming over on my lane; I was doing about 90mph in 5th gear. Should I be concerned with this occassional puff of smoke or is it natural for this to happen for a car with this amount of miles. No more plain mailings? I have NO trouble occasionally unsub'ing and resub'ing to the list so David's life can be easier, software updated, etc. The mere fact that he pays and I don't makes thisthe minimum I could do. I'm tempted not to rant too much until my first two questions above are confirmed. However, since it -appears- that the digest is the only way now,I think I'll get some of my complaining done now, as well as ask some more questions. Wasn't a Digest already available? Is this ONLY to save David money? (that would be the best reason) Can I still receive things the "old" way? If so, how? Reading this group as a digest will drive me off. The convenience of scrolling through titles and reading what I'm interested in allows me to rarely, if EVER, have to read something I may consider spam. Combine that with the low quantity of spam on this group (possibly the lowest on earth) and life is good. With only a digest, as I rcvd this evening when I logged on, I can't scan titles, can't group my mail according to subject and read it that way, can't direct reply to single messags without a cut and paste nightmare, and will have a harder time replying to an individual and not the entire group. ARGH. If this has all been done b/c the whiner who thought he had too much mail, then ready my flamethrower...Now I HAVE to read EVERY message about EVERY topic to read ANY messages. Lovely. <> I'm hoping that there's agood reason for this or that I've misunderstood the changes. Of course, I'll have to read EVERY MESSAGE ON THE PLANET to find out IF anyone answers my questions, let alone what those answers may be, and can only save them by saving THE ENTIRE digest, and any others that have the same topic...Please flame me and tell me that I've misunderstood. I liked the old way also. That way, I too could skip over messages that didn't interest me , like how the XYZ air filter combined with the ABC muffler and adjusting the Turbo to 3000psi will gain me 3 horsepower on a MKII. (sorry, not a flame, but I own a NA MKI that is still all stock, and I'm happy with it that way) But anyways, it was easier for me to simply skip over the articles that did not interest me. Jack 86 Red NA ------------------------------ From: uunet!touch.caltech.edu!charlesg (Charles Grosjean) Date: 17 Oct 95 02:49:18 GMT Subject: models, body kits, and new mail server I was in my local hobby shop the other day and saw two models by Fujima/MRC. One was a red MR2 with silly little features like a teddy bear, skateboard, etc. and the other one was white with 18" wheels. That one looked pretty nice but I absolutely stink at models so I passed them up; both were Mk II's. One thing of special note was the front spoiler on the white kit, it has a rectangular air duct (brake cooling) on each side. This is available in Japan from 5ZIGEN and who knows, Options might be able to get you one (as they have exhausts from the same). There is another front lip and wing combo available from "Rockwell by East Bear" that IMHO looks much better, and is much more subdued than the other kits I've seen. I'll have to put pictures on the web site. With regards to majordomo, I thought it was coming in digest form, but then I took a look at another server (we gateway mailing lists to news here) and the latest messages are individual so what's the scoop? If it doesn't cost David more money, I would also prefer individual messages and culling mail and replying is much simpler that way. Charles ------------------------------ From: dgh (David G. Hough at validgh) Date: Mon, 16 Oct 95 20:30:29 PDT Subject: something actually having to do with MR2's for a change At 55000 miles it was time for my first brake job. At the recommendation of a member of this list, I took it to Yarnell's in Mountain View. It was a pleasure talking to a guy (Trevor) who actually knew all about supercharger oil in MR2's - this suggests that they might actually have some experience with supercharged MR2's, which is not the comfortable feeling I got at Capitol Toyota, whose main claim to fame is making the inside back cover of Consumer Reports for offering a free oil change to any customer who would give them a good rating on a survey somebody was doing. Anyway Yarnell's took a look, told me the front pads were still good, changed the rears and turned all the rotors - I was getting a real bad vibration when I braked hard at freeway speeds, way worse than "normal" MR2 shimmy. When I came to pick up the car and offered plastic, they declined, said I could mail them a check and let me drive off. As far as I can tell the braking vibration is cured. I'll be doing my 60,000 mile work there I think. ------------------------------ From: dgh (David G. Hough at validgh) Date: Mon, 16 Oct 95 20:38:44 PDT Subject: and now back to our regularly scheduled administrative noise I commented several times recently that when I got majordomo going it would be a digest only except for "announcements". That has to do with the explosive growth in volume over the past year that is now costing me at least $200/month. I hate digests too, but it's a lot less expensive to send out most of the stuff in bulk in the middle of the night. There may be mail readers that undigest stuff for you automatically and conveniently - people knowing about that should speak up. The real solution is to start a newsgroup for MR2's. That way the chatty may indulge freely without a guilty conscience. The volume of mr2-interest was already bigger than any newsgroups I read regularly. Even better would be a MODERATED newsgroup - all newsgroups will be moderated within a year, I think, at the rate things are going. So my suggestion is that whichever three people are most annoyed about the digest get together and go through the process to get rec.autos.mr2, or whatever it should properly be called, going as a moderated newsgroup with three moderators backing each other up. I'll be happy to forward mailing list postings to the newsgroup if so desired, and maybe somebody else who is so inclined can set a (separate) mailing list that gets everything posted to the newsgroup. ------------------------------ From: ken wong Date: Tue, 17 Oct 1995 00:09:00 -0700 (PDT) Subject: windshield washer I currently have summer windshield washer fluid, I would like to change to the winter fluid, I believe I have around 3.5 litres in the reservoir.
